12 Blog ideas for 2022

12 blog idead for 2022

Regardless what type of business/company you have or work for, you can always use some blog ideas to start of the new year. Let me share some of my blog ideas for each month of 2022. You can use the blog ideas across any social media platform as well.

1. Share your knowledge

You and/or your team have a lot of knowledge about one or more topics. In this blog you can highlight one of them. A few examples are:
– How can social media help your business grow?
– What equipment do you need as a freelance front end developer?
– Can you make money while traveling the world?
– Do you need a website for your “personal” brand?

2. Something fun

Share a fun fact to light up this month’s blog.
Examples are:
– An activity that you can do from home (covid edition)
– Your favorite food, including the recipe
– A DIY project you recommend
– Your team’s secret talents

3. Free knowledge

Share how people who are interested in the same work how they can get into the work field without having a specific degree. For example:
– Free courses
– Free webinars
– Free E-books
– Free workshops

4. The start of your career

Matching with the previous blog idea, you can share your story. How did you get into your career? Did you study something specific of something completely different from what you currently do? Ask your team to share their stories as well.

5. Mistakes

Share the mistakes you or your team made regarding your business.
– Starting a podcast and it didn’t get an audience
– Paying thousands of dollars for something that wasn’t worth it

6. FAQ

Do you get a couple of questions regularly, write a FAQ or answer them in a blog. Pinpoint the blog somewhere logical on your website so everyone can find it whenever they need it. A couple questions the include in a FAQ are:
– How long does shipping takes?
– How much are the shipping costs?
– Can I get a customized product?
– Where are you located?

7. Relate the unexpected

Pick an unrelated topic and tie it to your business. It can be anything. For example:
– Meditation helped you sleep better, which resulted in you being more successful.
– How you learned HTML and CSS as a communication specialist so you understand SEO better.

8. Review time

Interview a few of your customers or let them share their story about your business.
– How do they use your product?
– What are their thoughts about your service?
– What is the most creative way of using your product?
– Would they recommend your business to their friends and family?

9. Social media

Share some social media tips that you have used to grow your business.
– Have you shared an X amount of posts/stories consistently?
– Have you done a specific course to gain more knowledge?
– Have you interacted with your followers on a daily basis?

10. Q&A

Allow your customers and followers to send you questions and answers them in a blog or in a video, or both. This way you include your target audience within your content which will help with the reach.

11. Jokes/gif’s

Share a blogpost with the best jokes and/or gif’s related to your career. Everyone likes to laugh, and need it especially during the winter months.

12. Recap

Use December to recap your year and tell your audience what you learned, did, and would have done differently if you could. Also share what your goals and desires are for the new year. Get personal and dare to be vulnerable.

5 Reasons why you need a SMM

There are many reasons why you need a Social Media Manager, but I will highlight the most important 5 reasons.

  1. Engagement

You audience on social media needs constant interaction and engagement. A social media manager will communicate with your audience, if this is part of your contract. Your SMM will help to protect your reputation and help your (potential) customer with any question they might have. 

  1. Measuring the effectiveness of the strategy

Your social media manager is required to report to you about the posts, stories and all other contents performances. There are several metrics that can be reported such as; followers count, number of posts, impressions, engagement rate, traffic to links, saves, customers, views and comments. 

  1. Trends are always changing

Social Media Managers keep track of all the trends and changes in the algorithm to make sure your content is based on the latest trends. They can also suggest using a new platform such as TikTok.

  1. Growing your audience

When your audience grows, your credibility grows. Growing a social media platform is one of the most difficult tasks a Social Media Manager has. It is never guaranteed that a post or story is going to succeed the way you anticipated.

  1. Promotions and Advertising

A Social Media Manager has experience with running promotions and ads over multiple platforms. They can not only advice you which post is the most relevant and probably successful to promote but they can also help to set up your advertisement and contests/giveaways.

Content Creation

Content creation is part of the bigger term Content Marketing. We create content on a daily bases; creating a post for social media, writing an email to your potential client, making a presentation to share monthly updates. Everything you share with another person can be considered CONTENT.

Types of content are:

  • Social media post, story, reels, IGTV, tweets, captions and more
  • Website text, blogs, landing pages etc.
  • eBooks/guides
  • Infographics
  • Photography
  • Blogs, articles
  • Emails
  • Books
  • Checklists
  • Presentations
  • Quizzes
  • Flyers
  • Brochures
  • Posters
  • Ect.

This blog focuses on the creation of content for social media, although the tips can be used for almost every type of content. There are 5 steps I personally use when I create content.

Step 1. Getting ideas

Before you start creating content it is necessary to get ideas. I like to use my own knowledge first, what information that I know can I share with my audience. Then one of my favorites for inspiration is Pinterest or other relatable accounts on social media. There are also many blogs or news pages to follow for inspiration. Do whatever feels good to you. I like to make a list of ideas per social media account so I can create them all at once. Whenever you get inspiration, make sure to give your own spin to it, and actually add to the information by doing your own research.

Start using Content Pilars. A Content Pilar is a topic that you will consistently discuss. Your content will relate to this Content Pilar. It helps you to get clarity on your niche. Being an expert in one or a few (3-5) area’s will help you to grow your audience faster. I would recommend getting 3-5 Content Pilars so your content stays interesting and varied. For example; a travel influencer who uses the Content Pilars: Backpack locations, Backpack hacks and hostels/hotels for backpackers. The niche is backpacking/backpackers, and then 3 topics to discuss.

Step 2: Content Calendar

A content calendar is a list of content ideas, posting dates and often the subject. I always add the Content Pilar the piece of content belongs to, and one of the 4 key take aways when it comes to creating content.

  • Educational
  • Inspirational
  • Promotional
  • Entertaining

Make sure that every piece of content falls in one of the categories listed above and match within your Content Pilars. It helps you to maintain structured and organized content spread over all your platforms.

The content calendar is your guiding tool in which you list all the upcoming posts, blogs, and all the other forms of content. You can create your own content calendar or get mine in the shop.
You can add the holidays from your country, or even birthdays of staff members. What you put in the content calendar is totally up to you.

Step 3: Creating content

You can choose to create your content in bulk or per post. I prefer to create in bulk whenever I can. This means I spend less time on each post, and create multiple pieces of content whenever I feel creative. It is really up to you how you create your content. I make a list of all the content pieces that I want to create and when, this allows me to plan my content ahead and still add or adjust content pieces that are news or trend related.

There are many tools to help you create content. I personally love to use Canva to create most of my content. You could use Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or one of the many other options out there. One of my thumb rules is to get inspired, and create your own content piece. It happens very often that similar accounts will post similar or the same content as you. I always post my own posts with my own written captions, or blogpost even though someone else created something similar. Because there is a limited amount of information, trends and news in the world it will happen that you and another creator create something very similar.

Step 4: Posting content

Posting might be the most rewarding step of content creation. You get to see others interact with the information you shared. There are several options when it comes to posting your content:

  • Post directly
  • Schedule posting
  • Automatic posting

Posting directly is ideal if you create a news message, or share something that is on high priority. Always make sure to check for grammar mistakes or mistakes in the design. It is best not to edit a post or blog once it is live, this could hurt the algorithm that is used to show your content piece.

Scheduling is very handy when you bulk create or want to plan your posts ahead of time. You can use several tools to schedule your posts on social media or you website. Personally I use WordPress for my website and it allows you to schedule your blog posts or new (landing) pages ahead of time. This will be automatically I use Buffer for scheduling my social media posts. It is possible to get a reminder before posting so you can post it on the schedules time.

Buffer can also be used for automatic posting. It works for almost all social media platforms, only Instagram doesn’t allow you to post directly to their platform, you can get a notification so you get to post on time. Automatic posting helps you to save time on your day to day tasks. However you will need to add your captions and hashtags before you post or schedule the automatic post. As a social media manager, I use automatic posting for all my clients so they can see when which post will be online. Besides that we can post directly whenever necessary.

Step 5: Analytics

The last step of content creation before the whole cycle starts all over again is analytics. If you use a tool such as Buffer, for posting, you will already see a bunch of analytics in their system. Other than that every platform provides you with very valuable insights per post and per account. You will see information such as how many likes, comments, saves, click through, age, location, time of seeing your posts and much more.

For your website you can use the free tool Google Analytics. It is pretty straightforward, but Google offers a free course to understand all the insights better.

Analytics will help you to target better and more specific. You can save a lot of money if you know which niche you target op social media and which niche you actually reached.

Favorite apps for social media

There are so many different app to use for social media and online marketing. I use a couple of them but my favorites are Canva, Preview, Lightroom and Buffer. Using apps in your advantage is super important to cut some time. I personally use these apps to make my work easier and to work faster.

Canva is a graphic design platform, which is used to create social media posts/stories, presentations, logo’s, business cards, and much more. Canva has a free and paid version, and is even allows you to work in files together. Canva is available in an app and desktop version. 

Preview is a simple app which allows you to “preview” your instagram feed before it is posted, and even when it is posted. You can rearrange the order of your future posts, to your liking (follow a layout). It even has the option to find top trending hashtags and check your analytics. Preview is a free app, but you can’t post immediately on your feed. 

Lightroom is my favorite Adobe app! It is a photo editing app which allows you to make presets, so you can make your photo’s look more similar. With Lightroom you can lift your photography to the next level! The app is free to use and available for desktop and mobile. 

Buffer is a scheduling app which can be used for direct posting on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and for scheduling on Instagram. Buffer has a free and paid version to use on desktop and app. Buffer is great if you want to create bulk posts or post on set times. It is easy and time saving!

Instagram Feed Layouts

Instagram is a photo and video sharing social media platform. You can share bits of your life, business, pet, food, fashion, basically everything you like.
Personally I use instagram for 2 reasons, my personal one as a diary of my life and my business one to share my knowledge.

Instagram works with a feed where you can post your photo’s or video’s. There are many layouts that you can use to make your instagram look more aesthetic. People like instagram feeds that are pleasing to the eye in terms of colors, layout and structures. I will write a blog later about the psychology behind different colors.

Starting a small business 2/2

In this blog serie you will be given tips, insights and information from myself and several small business owners. The series purpose is to give you the push you need to start your own small business. There will be two parts of this series; interviews with small businesses, what you need to start a small business and insights about the small business market. 

This blogpost will give you a 10 step plan to follow when starting your business and a few tips.

Starting your own small business is exciting and challenging at the same time. I like to refer to it as a learn as you go process, although there are many things you can prepare for beforehand. For example the business name and products/services you offer.
As the owner of your own business you not only have to make products or provide the services, you also have to take of the financial part, administration and marketing. You could hire specialists to take over or assist you with these tasks, but most small businesses can’t afford that in the beginning.
The following steps are to guide you through the process of the starting your business.

  1. Do your market research.
    This is not the fun part of starting a business but in my opinion might be the most important one. Find out who your competitors are and what they are doing to market their product/service. If there are many competitors doing exactly the same of what you attend to do, it might be a smart move to market your product/service differently. The market research is part of your business plan.
  2. Write a business plan.
    In the business plan you write down your idea and how you thing to make it happen. It is the foundation of your business. In a business plan you write down how to structure, run and grow your business. When writing a business plan think about the location, will you work from home, from an office or do you need to rent/buy a store. The most important part of the business plan is to make a rough lay out of how you want to do certain things such as marketing. Don’t forget to make a financial overview with the costs of making your product, the selling price and if you need funding how are you going to get that and how much you need. Finding funds can be done in many different ways; a loan from family, the bank or friends, start a go-fund-me, a fundraiser, your own savings or even a business partner.
  3. Choose a business structure.
    What “type” of business are you? In every country they use a different system. The business structure that you choose will have impact on the registration requirements, taxes and the personal liability. I will explain the main differences between the business structures. Business structures without corporate (legal) personality are:
  • Solo proprietor or solo trader. This means you are the only owner, and are fully reliable for your business. You can hire staff but not a business partner. Freelancers register as a solo proprietor of solo trader as well.
  • Commercial partnership. If you want to start a business with a partner this is the option for you. You will work under the same common name.
  • Public partnership. In a public partnership you practice your profession alongside your partners under a shared name.
  • Limited partnership. If you were thinking about setting up a commercial partnership, but were short on capital or needed a financial backer, then a limited partnership might be just the legal structure you’re looking for. In a limited partnership, your financial backer actually becomes a partner in your business. That partner is referred to as a limited, sleeping or silent partner.

There are also business structures with corporate (legal) personality but these are often bigger businesses.

  1. Register your business.
    If you have to register as a small business, depends on your location and business structure. In many countries you can make an appointment at the federal government and become a legal entity. The major perks of registering your business, is that you get trademark protection for your business name. Depending on the country and business structure, a registration can cost money. In the Netherlands a solo trader business registration costs €50,- once. Along with the business registration you have to get your state tax ID. In some countries you will receive it automatically and in other countries you have to apply for it using your employer identification number (EIN).
  2. Open a bank account.
    As a business you can open a business bank account. A business bank account is important so you can separate your business incomes and set aside money to pay for the taxes.
  3. Apply for licenses and permits.
    In order to stay legally compliant, make sure to apply for the right licenses and permits. These will vary per industry, state, location, business type and other factors.
  4. Apply for insurance.
    There are many insurances to apply for, depending on your business type and location. I would recommend getting a liability insurance and health insurance for sure. Many industry related websites offer information on which insurances are recommended for your type of business. If you are still unsure you can always ask other businesses what insurance they have.
  5. Design a logo.
    Let someone design a logo, or fo it yourself. The logo will be used on many communication tools such as social media, your website, business cards, invoices and flyers. The logo will be your first point of brand awareness and recognition.
  6. Buy a domain name and design a website.
    In my eBook, I explain this step more in-depth. The domain name should be the same as your business name or very similar. There are several websites that allow you to buy a domain name. Building a website doesn’t have to be hard and complicated. WordPress and Wix both offer templates that you just fill in. Or you can hire a website designer.
  7. Make social media accounts.
    In order to market yourself, you can use social media as a tool. There are so many different social media options, for any market and age group. When making social media profiles use your business name, to gain brand awareness. Social media is used

Some tips that will help you when you are starting your business:

Tip 1 Choosing your business name.
Make sure to choose a business name that reflects your business product/service or is unique on its own. Always check if your business name is available or used by someone else. You don’t want people confusing your business with someone else’s.

Tip 2 Be passionate about what you do.
Loving every part of your business is almost impossible, but you need to hype yourself and your business up! You will spend a bunch of time and energy in your business, so it is really important to truly enjoy and love what you’re doing. And especially be excited about your own products or services.

Tip 3 Don’t do it alone.
Starting a business is time consuming and a very exciting thing to do. You will need a support system consisting of friends, family and more. They can help you packing orders, or support your social media posts, promote you to their friends and family. Most importantly, you can use their knowledge in your advantage. For example, your friend has a degree in finance. They can help you set up your finance and teach you how to pay for taxes. And last but not least they can help you with judging your ideas. Sometimes I get super exited about an idea and then my friends talk to me about the execution and how I see it in my head. That is sometimes the best moment to stop talking, or to tell them how I can make it happen. And they are the ones who buy first, because they got super excited as well.

Tip 4 Get clients or customers first.
In times like these it is hard to find clients and customers willing to buy from a starting company. Spend time to connect with potential clients/customers. You can never market yourself too early.

A trend of 2020 is definitely to shop local, from small businesses and support friends and family when they pursuit their dreams. I’m part of a group on Facebook called Gals Who Graduate (GWG), this is a group filled with woman from all over the world supporting and helping each other with all kinds of questions. A lot of these woman started a company during the past year and even before. I interviewed a few amazing small businesses ran by woman. Read about their journey and tips below!

Emma is a 19 year old Marketing student at the University of Liverpool and the founder and owner of Emma.Customs! During lockdown, after realizing the amount of time she had on her hands and just how much she missed being creative, she decided to buy her first pair of white Air Force 1, ordered a load of paints and got to work.

What product or service do you make/offer?
My business started out as just designing and selling custom shoes. Some of my customers will come to me with exact pictures of the shoes they’d like, whereas others will just have a very vague concept and I will create their design from scratch! I do offer CAD (computer aided design) services as well, helping those who are more unsure of what they want to be able to see what the final custom will look like. Recently, I have expanded into digital illustrations, creating drawings of people’s favourite photos or memories! I particularly love designing shoes or illustrations that I know are a gift, as it’s so amazing to see or hear people’s reactions!

Why did you start with your business?
Having taken art and textiles A-Level at school, I’ve always loved designing and being creative. Whilst my marketing degree allows me to do this to an extent, the practical side of my creativity had been somewhat lost, and after going into lockdown during Covid, I realised this would be the perfect opportunity to bring this back! During the long period spent at home, I was able to focus on building and expanding my online presence whilst designing shoes for customers, helping me to get where I am today!  I also thought it would be a great opportunity to outwork everything that I’m learning at university, gaining first-hand experience on content creation, insight analysis, influencer marketing and more!

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I know everyone seems to say it, but first of all, just do it! I honestly had no idea just how much my business would take off and before even launching it, had lots of doubts about whether or not to start just in case it didn’t go well! My first ever pair of customs designed for a customer is still, to-date, one of my most complex designs and the one that really kick-started my business. I remember nearly saying to my customer that I couldn’t do it, and looking back now, I’m so glad I didn’t otherwise I would not be where I am today! Next, I’d say take every opportunity you can! As my business has grown, I’ve been lucky enough to be included in multiple research articles, have worked with influencers and am now collaborating with Student Beans! Everything you do is another chance to share your business with potential new customers, to build trust and is also free advertising! Lastly, I’d say make sure you engage with your audience! Whether this is through replying quickly to messages or comments, or even just interactive stories, it all helps in creating an engaged and loyal community! 
My main piece of advice on what not to do is to try not to doubt yourself TOO much! Of course, there’ll be some days or moments where you do, that’s normal, but just try to believe in yourself as much as you can because if you don’t trust yourself, it’s very hard for your customer to do the same! 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
I think it’s got to be all the amazing opportunities I’ve experienced as a result of the business! Not only does this include my collaborations with influencers and Student Beans, but also those as simple as being able to design my customers a pair of shoes or a drawing that they absolutely love, all whilst being able to express my creativity! Like I said above, I had no idea just how much the business would take off, and I feel so lucky to have the opportunities that I do! 


Isobel founded Perl Cosmetics during the first lockdown of 2020. She sells handmade, customizable pearl powder clay masks that leave your skin glowing and incredibly soft!

Why did you start with your business?
It has always been a dream of mine to combine my love for skincare and passion for science and start a skincare business. After I lost my job due to covid in May, I knew it was the opportunity to get my business started. I launched in July 2020 and have been loving it!

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
When launching your business, don’t leave things for the last minute. Make sure you plan properly and factor in for delays and mistakes. Be open to change and keep what’s best for your business at the front of your mind. Sometimes things don’t work the way you want and you’ve got to be open to change!

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing is seeing pictures of my product on peoples skincare shelves! I will never get over seeing my product next to known skincare brands on my customers shelves!


Nikita Sarah Johnson (NSJ) is a Manchester born photographer and designer. Her work centers around the genres of fashion and portrait photography and projects usually stem from social and cultural issues such as racism and sexism. She recently graduated from Leeds Arts University where she studied BA Photography. Her business name is NSJ photography and design. This year she started branching out in the creative industry and began making illustrations. This has now lead her to the creation a Christmas card collection which has begun being sold in local shops as well as on her Etsy store.

What product or service do you make/offer?
I began my Etsy store in late November as a side hobby. It was a way of getting my work out there and also making a bit of extra money. I started by selling photography travel prints of places I had documented. It’s now branched out to housing my illustration prints from postcards to my Christmas card collection. I now also offer custom illustrations which are perfect gifts.

Why did you start with your business?
The reason I started selling my work was partly to do with the pandemic. I was unable to go out and shoot so had to rework my old photographs. I felt there was a market for it on Etsy. After finishing uni I no longer felt I had to stick to my course of photography and could further develop my skills in illustration. Having my own small business meant I could continue being creative but also make money from it.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
If you want to start a small business a couple of things I’ve learnt very quickly are to use social media to your advantage and to know your own worth. Social media is a great tool to get the word out there about your business regardless of what you are selling. Facebook groups help me a lot as there’s so many other likeminded creatives sharing their stories and tips. Being constantly present on Instagram is too a great tip as Instagram works off interactively. Continuously upload content and keep people interested. Know your own worth when it comes to pricing. I started my pricing low because I personally thought I wouldn’t spend such an amount on an item if I was the buyer. However this didn’t help me financially as I put quite a bit of money and time into the production of my products. Eventually I upped my prices and people still bought items. Just now and again put flash sales on. This may help with increase views and sales. Things take time, but when you make your first sale it feels amazing.

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing about being a small business owner is that I get to create work I’m passionate about. The feeling when someone likes something I made is amazing and spurs me on to create more. There’s times where you doubt yourself and your work but getting great feedback also boosts your mood and makes it feel all worth while.


Kayleigh is a 22 year old, full time Speech & Language Therapy student based in Manchester. Her business is called Boujee Boutique. She makes clay earrings and is looking to expand her products in the new year to rings, necklaces and other cute items. Her designs are bold, bright and girly!

Why did you start with your business?
I decided to start my business because uni was starting to become quite overwhelming, being based online due to the pandemic. I needed something else to do to keep me sane, I’ve always loved art and being creative so my business is something that I genuinely enjoy.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
What I would recommend to any aspiring business owners, is to really be passionate about what you’re making/selling/doing because it really shows. Running a business that you enjoy makes all the difference and just makes the whole experience fun. 
It’s also great to make friends with other small business owners and influencers because we can all support each other and collaborate. 
Also, anyone who’s just started out or struggling to sell or build a following, please dont give up, it takes time. 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing about being a business owner is doing everything myself, I put a lot of time and effort into everything. I make my items, logos and packaging I manage my social media accounts, I take my items to be sent off. It’s all me and although it’s time consuming it pays off.


Ella started her macrame small business called EmayKnots! She created macrame wall hanging decor and plant hangers. All made from organic cotton and eco friendly.

Why did you start with your business?
I started my business because I love creating things I saw a wall decor in a shop once and thought that I would love to be able to do that. Over the summer of 2020 I decided to teach myself and create artwork which then carried onto be a business. 

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I recommend them to always keep going doesn’t matter about the sales or the followers when you start out it’s all about growth and it works online hugely get yourself out there on many different platforms. Your business needs to be something you love doing, and when you get your first sales it is even more rewarding. I recommend not to give into lower offers all the time a healthy sale or too is okay. It is important as many people will want things for lower but don’t belittle your time and effort that goes into the business you know how much it costs. And how important it is to value your work correctly. 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing about being a business owner is having people appreciate and love the work I am creating. I have so much enjoyment creating them my self it is wonderful when people feel the same.


Cat Kevern has a graphic design business where she created down to earth, no-nonsense projects. She likes to get the job done properly. She delivers branding, logo design, corporate identities and overall strategy to businesses in need of creative visual input.

Why did you start with your business?
I wanted to make my passion my job and so I decided to launch full time as a graphic designer after doing it as a hobby for the last few years.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I always say to people starting out or setting up their own business to just follow their instincts, be approachable and personal in any given project. Try your best at anything, work hard and aim to be the best version of yourself and that will come across to clients. 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing is being able to work when I want, where I want in the world and also choosing to work with clients whose visions align with mine. It’s frightening at times but with that comes freedom, and at the end of the day, what’s more important than being free?


Georgia is based in Kent and has a business called Gush Studios. She makes colour palette photography prints inspired by her travels around the world and has a slight obsession with matching colours.

Why did you start with your business?
Gush came about after graduating from BA Photography into this pandemic and feeling a little lost at what to do! After many hopeless job applications and feeling stuck already, I decided to just go for it and put my work out there. I have so many photos stuck inside my hard drives never seeing the light of day, that I thought it would be worth a try designing them into real prints that could help brighten up other people’s walls. It’s been such a saviour having something of my own to focus my energy on and stay sane at an otherwise chaotic time.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I’d say the most important thing is peserverance, and also surrounding yourself with supportive people whether that be loved ones or an online community (I’ve found facebook groups really useful). Because it’s such a lot of work at the start to get things going when you don’t totally know what you’re doing, so keeping at it and having others help you is definitely key! What not to do? Don’t compare yourself to everyone else constantly- it’s such a killer. Everyone’s journey is different and it’s so easy to feel disheartened seeing other people do so well if you’re struggling, so keep focused on your own path and you’ll be fab:)

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing is the feeling of self-confidence it’s given me. Knowing that I’ve made my own little idea come to life has made me realise how capable I am of showing up for myself and putting the work in. And of course seeing my prints in other people’s homes is such a joy! I can’t wait to keep sharing the colour palette love, and I’m excited to explore some new ideas in the near future.


Dia started a small business called Dia Adornments. She created artwork using real pressed flowers which she grows herself and picks from her garden. The petals are pressed for four weeks in heavy books or in her flower presses before she can arrange them beneath card silhouettes, which she cuts by hand. She has two collections so far; Lady Silhouettes and Travel. Besides these two collections, she has done lots of custom pieces as well. And she just launched a range of pressed flower pin badges which are super cute!

Why did you start with your business?
Dia Adornments started during the summer as I bought my first home at the start of the year and quickly spent more and more hours in my happy place (the garden). I enjoyed the sun, and hours of spare time due to lockdown, and quickly saw my garden blossom with so many beautiful flowers. I fell ever so in love with my garden and wanted to preserve the blooms I’d so carefully grown and I used to have a flower press when I was a little girl so one day I ran inside to grab some of my heavy books and within a few days I’d filled all of the books I owned! I then knew that around a month later I would need something to do with all the petals so I got to work designing my Lady Silhouettes which took inspiration from the cameos my Grandparents have hung on the wall of their staircase. My Grandma has always been a huge part of my creativity so I wanted to do something that related to her for my first works. My second collection, Travel, was voted for by my wonderful Instagram followers who have been so supportive over the last few months – I appreciate every one of them so much! 

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
My recommendation to any aspiring business owners is to make sure it really is something you’re passionate about! I spend three weeknights every week working on Dia Adornments and most of every weekend too so you definitely need to be willing to put the time in. I’d also say, make sure you check any copyright laws before beginning your venture. Lots of people quickly begin using work which has been created by someone else because it’s recognizable and could possibly be easier to sell but this could land you in a lot of trouble!

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
My favourite thing about being a business owner is the amazing people I’ve “met”! My customers and followers have been so supportive and lovely, I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to connect with so many fab people. I also 100% do a happy dance every time I get an order; it’s a feeling like no other knowing that someone else loves your work!


Phoebe is a 22 year old from Derbyshire and she started her business this summer called FeebPotz! She offers unique, hand-painted plant pots to put a smile on your face. Each pot has its own personality and can be used for indoor & outdoor use. In addition, she just started experimenting with AirDry Clay and making decorations out of it.

Why did you start with your business?
I started this ‘adventure’, simply out of wanting to distract myself from the situation the world is in right now. I’ve always loved being creative, however since having my Art graded at school, I became critical of myself and started to avoid anything crafty. FeebPotz was just a temporary hobby and now, there are strangers who also support my creativity. Also, this year I have become a plan enthusiast (although I’m still trying to perfect the skill) and I wanted to create cool pots for my own plants. This is why my shop slogan is ‘Cool pots 4 cool people’.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I haven’t been doing this for long, but I think business owners should remember to be themselves. Be creative, unique and add your own style. People want your personal touch, don’t follow the crowd. Be inspired, but also trust your own creative outlook.

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
Easy. Knowing that there is people in this world, people who I may walk past, that have one of my pots in their homes. These people are strangers, but I’m so grateful they’ve chosen to have my art in their safe environment. This simple act of kindness helps improve my confidence ad a person and my passion for art.


Amy is a 21 year old from Sheffield and started her company Amyrlogos. She offers mainly logos. She does all sorts of branding packages which include gift vouchers, price lists, templated for your Instagram posts/stories, anything you need for your business!

Why did you start with your business?
I completely fell into it! One of my best friends was going self employed and needed a logo for her brow page, I had just done a module at uni which required me to brand myself and she had seen me do that and said she didn’t have the money to pay someone (the person she was recommended was quite pricey!) so she asked me to do one for her! Funnily enough I absolutely hated that part of my module. I must have sent her about 50 logos to chose from aswell thinking she wasn’t going to pick any but she did. Then after that I had people message me saying they’d seen the one I had done for my friend and wanted me to do them one as well! I suppose I did get lucky, I had to teach myself a lot of it but I have fallen in love with it as well.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
Do not undercharge! I know to start with I did my friend a favour but after that I had no clue what the going rates for logos and branding were! I definitely keep things more casual so I do factor this into my price but when you think of the hours that go into it! I’m still adjusting my prices to my experience now so don’t feel guilty if you think you’re asking for too much money, if people want to work with you they will if they don’t they don’t! 
Also practise! I find my uni work and passion projects help me experiment and try new things!

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
Well for me it’s not my only source of income so at the moment I love the dreams I have of it being so! Definitely makes me push myself that bit harder, but I love the networking part of it, I’ve (virtually) met so many people through my Instagram and I think it’s amazing how that’s possible! I suppose I owe my friend a lot for believing in me as without her tagging me saying I did her logo, it wouldn’t have got me all the work I have got! 
Crazy how we can network like we do all in the palm of our hands!

Rosie Wells is the owner of Rose & Rain Studio. She offers handmade accessories.

Why did you start with your business?
In June 2020 I completed my degree in Fashion Accessory Design. I then struggled to find a job in Fashion due to the national lockdown, therefore I decided to set up my own small business.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
I would recommend aspiring business owners to use social media to grow their business and to engage with their customers. 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
I love how owning your own business means you have lots of different roles. I love every aspect from making my products to creating social media content.


Anoushka Rabin is the founder of Thread Wear. She makes bespoke, customizable vintage denim from up cycled and recycled vintage Levi’s jeans.

Why did you start with your business?
I started my business because I love the process and creating something completely individual and one of a kind for each customer. I love communicating and getting to know my customers. I believe jeans are very personal and therefore should be individualised. Not everyone is the same shape or size and thus they shouldn’t have to wear the same style, shape, fit of jeans.

What would you recommend other aspiring business owners to do? And what not to do?
Go and do it! If you have an idea that you’re passionate about, chances are other people will be passionate about it too! Don’t overthink too much and ensure you think through your finances and stock first! 

What is your favorite thing about being a business owner?
I love communicating with my customers and the community of Instagram. The power of social media couldn’t be more apparent when you are running a small business solely on Instagram.

Work from home essentials

In the economy today it is more than normal to work from home, personally, I work from home all the time.
I created my own work place at home where I love to work.

I still receive questions why I love working from home so much. First off all, I can schedule my day more. I like to start my days around 9.30 am and work until 5 pm and maybe some additional evening hours. Weirdly enough I love working at night, everyone sleeps so it gives me the time to work in a quiet environment.

I created a list of my work from home essentials.

  • Desk. I have a ergonomic desk from Ikea (Skarsta 120x70cm)
  • Chair. I have a fake leather chair with wheels again from Ikea (Millberget)
  • Laptop. As you might see on the photo’s on the website I own a MacBook. Sometimes I connect an extra screen to my laptop but on a daily basis it is not necessary. I had to get a new laptop because I spilled water on my old one during my thesis period (the day of submission). My biggest recommendation is to get a laptop insurance which covers water damage. I bought my laptop at Amac (Macbook Pro 13 inch 2020 – 16GB – 512GB with Touch Bar)
  • Laptop stand. I got this during the first lockdown, and couldn’t be happier to buy it. It helps with neck-/back-pain. I got mine from Ikea (Bräda 42x31cm)
  • Notebook. I like to make a to do list for the week and per day to motivate me to get things done. I got mine from Action (Notitieboek A5)
  • Couple of pens. I get them from everywhere; university, work and bookstores
  • Blue-light glasses. One of the things I got 4 years ago are Blue-light glasses. I got them at the optician, but there are many site that sell them without prescription. It helped reducing my migraines and the pain in my eyes from looking at the screen all day
  • Water bottle. Drinking water really helps me to stay hydrated during the day. I have a bottle for half a liter, which keeps water cold or hot water warm. I got it from Amazon (Sho bottle)
  • Coffee/tea mug. If you drink coffee or tea a mug is essential. I use mugs that I got on a market in Amsterdam.
  • Headphones. Whenever I work, I play music. I have an office for myself so it doesn’t matter how loud I play my music, unless my family is home, then I use headphones. I use AirPods, which is ideal when I have a work call I can just walk around the house and my headphones stay connected.
  • Flowers/plant. My desk is facing a wall with no window. To see something colorful and alive, I try to keep a plant or flowers on my desk.
  • Candles. When working in the winter I can get pretty dark in my office. I always work with lights on, but a candle gives me a happy feeling and smells nice at the same time.
